Green Corridor

August 23, 2022 – This year the City and Borough of Juneau, the Port of Seattle, Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, Carnival Corporation, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, Royal Caribbean Group, Cruise Lines International Association, the Global Maritime Forum, Blue Sky Maritime Coalition, and Washington Maritime Blue launched a collaborative effort to take a deep dive into what it would take to maintain a green corridor between Alaska, British Columbia, and Washington?! Big steps! But what is a green corridor? And, why choose Alaska?

A green corridor is a shipping route where zero greenhouse gasses are considered, supported, and demonstrated! There are a handful of very powerful reasons why the Pacific Northwest is the natural home for the first U.S. green corridor. The Pacific Northwest is a diverse hub for the maritime industry, providing opportunities in research and development, innovation, engineering, and pioneering clean technologies and fuels. The effects of climate change are felt prominently in Alaska and ambitious climate action right now is necessary to ensure the travel industry’s collective future success. Additionally, there is a very distinct corridor that already exists between Puget Sound and Alaska with regular vessel activity by cruises, commercial fishing, cargo, ferries, and tug industries!
