Carbon Offset

August 9, 2022 – Did you know that as a traveler you can purchase carbon credits to offset your carbon footprint from cruising or flying? Traveling to Alaska can expose a world of environmental realities and make you question your impact.

A study published in the scientific journal Nature Climate Change showed that 87% of global travelers want to travel more sustainably and reduce their environmental impact, and two thirds of those travelers said they would pay more to make it possible.

There are nonprofits in Juneau and Sitka that use donations to pay for replacing oil-based heating systems with energy efficient heat pumps that run off renewable hydroelectric power. The donations made to the Juneau Carbon Offset Fund and Sitka Carbon Offset Fund stay in their communities and provide funding to residents that apply for financial assistance to replace their heating systems.

The Juneau Carbon Offset Fund’s website features a calculator that helps visitors determine their emissions based on method of travel (cruise or air travel), distance traveled, and excursions while visiting; then there's an option to donate the corresponding amount to offset those emissions! Pretty neat!
